Thought I would post a before and after shot of an image that I warmed up in a style reminiscent of Michelle Kane. She uses a lot of warm, rich tones that give her images a unique fine art appeal. Here is how I did it. The first image is SOOC brought into ACR for some minor tweaks. I warmed up the image increasing the white balance, decreasing overall brightness, and increasing the blacks. Then I brought the image into photoshop and used selective color to bring out the rich tones in the background only. I ran a Michelle Kane action called Bland to Brilliant to give the photo more pop and then sharpened for web. Would love to hear your comments!

What a wonderful gift to have a session with your teenage son. Teenagers are busy with friends, school, and activities that it is sometimes hard to record the moments like you did when they were toddlers. I was so impressed with this young man. He was polite, sweet, and a perfect gentleman. I think I too would love a session like this with my two teenagers {need to find a photographer first}.

Big Sister Brooklyn

Baby Trevin is One

I started off this session thinking I was going to use my beautiful creamy 85 1.2L to create some awesome bokeh pictures. Little did I know that one year olds move a lot! They move a lot faster than I do. Off with the 85mm and on with the 24-70mm 2.8L. I highly recommend zoom lenses for toddlers.
I smiled the whole time I edited this session. Trevin is soooo adorable and he has the most expresive face I have ever seen. I counted at least 5 different looks. I'm sure he will make you smile too. Our session started with sock monkey, a really adorable "jack in the box". Unfortunately, during our travels, sock monkey fell out of the wagon and landed right in the pond with all of the ducks. Mom bravely climbed down the hill to rescue beloved sock monkey.
What started out as a Trevin session quickly turned into a Mommy and Me session. I loved seeing the bond between Mother and Son and was happy to capture all their special moments.

I had the pleasure of photographing this awesome family. We enjoyed our time at the new Children's Garden in Assiniboine Park. Of course the play area drew the kid's attention away from the task at hand but that was easily solved by a few bribes of licorice. Hey you gotta do whatever you gotta do to keep those laughs and smiles coming including saying things like "poopy pants", this always gets them laughing. Thank you for a great time. My very good friend's daughter Sam graduated from grade 12 this year. I was delighted when they asked me to be a part of her day. The day started out with hair and makeup, and accessories.We all gasped when we saw her in her dress - stunning! I think Mom and Dad had tears in their eyes. Our session continued at the park with 5 of her friends and their boyfriends/dates. These girls looked amazing and were naturals in front of the camera.

I remember reading an article by Andrea Joki about exploring your neighborhood for areas to shoot. This session started in a little park in a residential neighborhood but just down the street was a field with the most beautiful golden light. Sometimes you don't have to go far to find the right location.

The ceremony was held at Fort Gibraltar. A perfect location for a cozy candlelit winter wedding. Bagpipes greeted the Bride as she made her way down the aisle.

Stunning blue eyes, beautiful full lips (thanks to her mother), and a warm smile. Here are a few of my favourite pics of the bride.

I love little flower girls. They are cute, adorable, and look like little princesses.

This is another beautiful moment I was honored to capture. As I was taking pictures of the bride and her mom, dad walked up the stairs. I did not see his expression but the joy in his voice as he saw his little girl in her wedding dress was beautiful. I did however capture the bride's expression as her father said: "Oh my God!"

I am so excited to share pictures of my very first wedding of a beautiful couple Christina and Joe. I thank them for trusting me with their special day and I wish them a lifetime of love and happiness. I have so many favourite moments of their special day that I think I will share them all in the next couple of weeks! My first share begins with all of the details.

I love this little note from Mom to Daughter. You see, Christina wore her Mother's wedding dress on her wedding day. Mom altered the dress to fit just right and Christina looked so amazing.

Not only did Mom make the dress she made the veil. It was fashioned with a beautiful hair clip and vintagey lace. Now we have something old and something new.

Something borrowed.

Golden Light

The golden light, the light just before sunset produces the most amazing pictures. It really is a hit or miss opportunity. You need to be at the right place (a field of beautiful tall prarie grass), at the right time (just when the sun sprays it's golden light onto the sheaths of grass), and of course, you need the right client (a couple of the most adorable little girls). I had that opportunity. I don't know if I'll ever have it again but for a brief moment I had that opportunity. It put a smile on my face. I hope it puts a smile on your face too.

The name Tessa brings back memories from my high school days. At the time we were studying the book "Tess of the D'urbervilles" by Thomas Hardy. I had never heard a name like that before and thought it was so unique and pretty. I remember going with my girlfriend to see the 1979 movie "Tess" directed by Roman Polanski and starring Nastassja Kinski whom I thought was the most amazing and beautiful actress ever. I just knew that if I had a girl I would name her Tess, Tessa, or even Tessia. (I was blessed with two beautiful boys).

I had the privelage of photographing baby Tessa. Not only is she beautiful like her name but she is calm and cuddly, adorable, and oh sooo sweet. She is about 17 days old in these pictures. Be prepared to have your heart melt.

Back in the Swing of Things

I can't believe it has been over 2 months since I last blogged. Quite frankly the fall session had me hopping with photo shoots and tons of editing. So, when November rolled around I just needed a break. Then December came and wouldn't you know it I was hit with the flu. More specifically, strep throat which I liken to child birth and a sinus infection that just wouldn't go away. Here we are in January and I feel somewhat back to normal minus the winter blues I ususally get around this time of year. I long to be in a warm climate perhaps Jamaica or Hawaii. I tease my little preschoolers who are off on a winter vacation to pack me away in their suitcase. They think this is hilarious but secretly I wish I could fly away with them. I try to remember last summer basking in the sunlight on the beach but it is a distant memory when the light leaves us at 5:00pm and the temperature hovers around -30 Celsius.

What have I been up to until now? Well, I have been busy reading, learning, and researching all things photography. I had my first newborn session and will have my first wedding at the end of January. I have been lusting for the Canon 70-200mm 2.8L and the Canon 50mm 1.2L - anyone wanna help a girl out :). I have set up several spring sessions with clients and am still designing mini accordian albums.
Thank you to everyone who helped me out during my portfolio building year. I learned a lot and met a lot of amazing people. I have grown in my photography and will be setting up pricing and packages to reflect this ( those lenses are calling my name after all).

There are still many photos to share from 2010 and I'd like to start with this adorable brother and sister team. I managed to capture some beautiful evening light photos. I especially love back lighting and use it whenever I can.

I find it takes a while for kids to warm up to the camera and this brother and sister team was no exception.

It wasn't long before I saw a fun and honest interaction. You could feel the love they had for each other.

I think they have a future in the movies.

Waiting For Baby

This pretty Momma is due in about a month - she looks amazing! I know this is a maternity session but when you add Dad and Big Bro then it becomes a family session. Lots of pictures ahead. Enjoy!
For my photographer friends, we started our session around 8:30am on a heavily overcast morning so it was important for me to stay out in the open and avoid the shade of trees. I used my 85mm 1.2L for the entire session (loving it!). I am still getting used to using my feet as the zoom and have to remember to step back and leave room around the edges of the photo. To give the photos a little warmth I adjusted the white balance in ACR, opened in photoshop and ran Phaunt's Sunshine in Your Hand on most of the photos.

Backlit Beauties

So one of my goals is to to get creative with lighting, especially back lighting. I was fortunate enough to have these two gorgeous teens help me out with my mission. We had about one hour then the clouds rolled in and the mosquitoes came out of hiding. Despite the setbacks I did learn a lot and can't wait to go out and try again.

I had the pleasure of photographing this beautiful mama exactly 4 weeks before her due date. Here is a sneak peek of part 1 of our session. We headed downtown for an urban session and happened upon a nice patch of long grass - perfect for some photos. I wish I had taken a pull back shot so you could see the parking lot and buildings around us. You can get the most beautiful pictures in the most unlikely places. I have been playing around with my new Florabella action set especially vintage and vanilla. Enjoy!

Shooting Wide Open

Here is another cutie pie from my class. I decided to try photographing wide open at f1.6, ss1/3200, and iso 320. I was so surprised to be able to get both eyes in focus. I see that it takes a lot of practice shooting wide open but the results are so dreamy. She looks like an angel.

The next two images were taken at f2.2, ss 1/2000, and iso400. Still dreamy!

Does she not have the most amazing eyes and pouty mouth? Her Mommy says everyone always comments on her big beautiful eyes.
I love photography but my day time job is being a Nursery School Teacher. This little angel is one of my students and she is posing for her memory book cover. Throughout the year I take photos of the children and then compile them into a memory book keepsake they will recieve on graduation day. I have to admit it is great to have lots of children to practice my photography on...smile!
For these photos I pulled out my 85mm. I can't believe I haven't been using it more. I love the creaminess of the skin tones with this lens. Audrey Wouldard http://www.audreywoulardblog.com/ uses this lens wide open at f1.6 and shoots in jpeg mode and has amazing photos. I decided to try jpeg, adjusting my picture styles to give me more contrast, sharpness, and saturation and was pleasantly surprised at the SOOC results. Pictures 3 and 4 only have a levels adjustment to brighten midtones. I shot at f3.2 about 3 feet away (too chicken to shoot wide open), ss 1/800, and iso 400.

I have been a bad blogger recently but here I am with some new photos to share. Here is a little peak into the life of a one year old cutie pie. On a side note I am loving the Clickin Mom's Forum. This session was an interesting one for me. I had camera difficulties. Now I know why photographers have back up cameras and equipment. It started out fine but later into the session my focal points froze and I couldn't toggle to get the focus I wanted. Needless to say there were quite a few OOF pics -ahh! I've had the camera for about 2 years and I think it is time to take it in for service. I sure don't want that happening again.

This little one year old is the fastest crawling toddler I know. But, there were some moments when he would slow down and give me the most adorable look. I love everyone of them! Enjoy!

So I thought I would use my 85 1.2L to take some puppy photos but I quickly learned that I can't move as fast as this little guy. Every time I would get him framed in the viewfinder, focused, and just about to press the shutter he would be gone! I should have used the 24-70mm it's much faster than me. I am totally in awe of this photographer http://www.cowbellyblog.com/ Her pet photos are so cool - especially graffiti wall dogs. How does she get them to sit so nicely? New Puppy

My Sister-in-Law just got the cutest Cockapoo puppy. His name is Cooper and he is just 8 weeks old. We met at the off-leash park today and of course I had to take a few snapshots of this cutie. Needless to say he got many ahhhh's at the park. Although his little paws were cold he kept wriggling out of our arms to run around with the big dogs. I only had time to edit this one photo but there is a lot more to come. Enjoy!

Loving the New Blogger

I am having so much fun customizing my blog. I can't believe how many options there are now. I just figured out how to change my font to Comic Sans! Thanks to all those great people out there for their tutorials.

I'd like to take a moment to thank all my friends for their encouraging words and believing in me even when there are times when I don't believe in myself. Goal #2 for 2010 is practice, practice, practice.

This brother and sister duo were so awesome to photograph. They were so polite and were willing to do anything I asked them. I love photographing teens because I actually have time to set my camera properly and usually get my focus right on (unlike when I am running after little kids -smile). My Adorable Niece

My adorable little niece came over to my house one day and of course I had to get the camera out and try some photos. She was so much fun to direct - dance for me, blow this dandelion, pick a pretty flower. I didn't even have to use any bribery - yet!

I just adore those eyelash pictures.

I'm posting this series to show you some of my conversions I've been playing around with. The first one is a regular colour pop, the second one is hazy similar to Lily Blue style www.lilyblue.com , and of course black and white. Enjoy!

Isn't this picture of these siblings just adorable. I was using my 85mm wide open at 1.2 for some other shots and didn't change my settings when I took this one. I must say I love the focus on her face and how it highlights the moment.

I processed this one to give it a hazy, vintage feel.

I must admit I love black and white photography. I have been spending some time playing with various techniques. There are so many options that it is hard to know when the photo is "done". First Maternity Session

Maternity sessions are so much fun. A beautiful glowing Mama and loving and adoring children and husband. What more could a person ask for? This is a special, near and dear, family to me and I was thrilled to be able to photograph this lovely moment in their lives. I must admit getting the right angle is much harder than you might think. Practice makes perfect - I must keep remembering this. I call them the T family because all of their names begin with the letter T. It didn't surprise me that the baby pool included guessing which T name they would give their baby. (I wasn't even close.) Enjoy!

It's Time To Blog Again

Welcome to my new updated photography blog. Many of my friends have been asking me to update my blog but quite frankly for all of 2009 I had no interest in posting on a regular basis. I have been busy, though, practicing photography and photoshop. I must admit that I haven't quite figured out what my "style" is yet. There are so many amazing photographers out there that I want to try all of their techniques. I'm hoping my style will become more evident to me and emerge through this blog. In the meantime enjoy my sessions from 2009.
